The Museum of Fine Arts (often abbreviated as MFA Boston or MFA) is located in Boston, Massachusetts. According to the public gallery area, it is the 20th largest art museum in the world. It has 8,161 works of art and more than 450,000 pieces of art that make it among the largest collections of the Americas. With over 1.2 million visitors annually and the highest number of visitors, it’s the 52nd-most visited art museum worldwide in the year 2019. It was established around 1870 in Copley Square; the museum was moved to its present Fenway site in 1909. It is part of Tufts University, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts located at Tufts.
Collection
The Museum of Fine Arts possesses objects from many styles and art forms. The museum also hosts an extensive database online that contains information on more than 346,000 items from its collection and is accompanied by digital images. The search engine is accessible via the Internet. Groups of Japanese artwork at the Museum of Fine Arts is one of the largest collections in the world other than Japan. Anne Nishimura Morse, the William and Helen Pounds Senior Curator of Japanese Art, oversees 100,000 total pieces, including the collection of 4,000 Japanese artworks and 5,000 ceramics, and more than 30,000 ukiyoe prints.
The collection’s foundation was put together in the 19th century by four men, Ernest Fenollosa, Kakuzo Okakura, William Sturgis Bigelow, and Edward Sylvester Morse. Each was a frequent visitor to Japan and was awed by Japanese art. Their contributions together make up about 75% of the present collection. In 1890 the Museum of Fine Arts became the first museum in the United States to establish a group and to appoint an individual curator for Japanese art.

The libraries of the Museum of Fine Arts collectively contain 320,000 items. William Morris Hunt Memorial Library’s primary branch is named the renowned American artist.
