Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is located in Boston, Massachusetts, which contains significant artifacts from European, Asian, and American art. The museum’s collection includes paintings, tapestries, sculptures, and other decorative arts. It was started in the name of Isabella Stewart Gardner, whose will required her collection of artwork to be displayed “for the education and enjoyment of the public forever.” A second wing that was added with the main structure close to Back Bay Fens was completed in 2012. In 1990, 13 of the museum’s artifacts were taken; the theft is still unsolved. The artworks, valued at around $500 million, were not returned. A reward of $10 million for information that leads to artwork’s return remains in place. Pest Control Boston King

The museum was constructed in the years 1898-1901 in the time of Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924). He was an American collector of art, philanthropist as well as patron for the arts, in the style of a 15th-century Venetian palace. It was opened for public viewing in 1903. Gardner began to collect seriously following the acquisition of a significant inheritance of her father’s in 1891. Buying Johannes Vermeer’s The Concert (c. 1664) at an auction in Paris in 1892 was her first significant purchase. It was in the year 1894 that Bernard Berenson offered his assistance in assisting her in acquiring an original Botticelli. Through his assistance, Gardner became the first American to own a piece of art by Botticelli, the Renaissance master. Berenson helped to acquire more than 70 artworks to be part of her collection.

Design

It was built to imitate a 15th-century Venetian palace. The museum offers an ambiance for Gardner’s evocative work. Gardner engaged Willard T. Sears to build the building close to the fens of Back Bay that are saline to house her ever-growing art collection. In the museum, three floors of gallery space are surrounded by an outdoor courtyard alive with color throughout the year. It is a common misconception that the museum was moved in Boston out of Venice and then rebuilt. It was constructed from scratch in Boston using new materials and incorporated many architectural elements of European Gothic and Renaissance structures.

Collection

Gardner was a collector who carefully presented more than 7500 works furniture, sculptures, silver, textiles ceramics as well as 1500 rare books as well as 7000 objects from the era of ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, Renaissance Italy, Asia, the Islamic world, as well as 19th-century France as well as America. Some of the artists represented by the exhibits comprise Titian, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Manet, Degas, Whistler, and Sargent. One of the first Matisse to join an American collection is within the Yellow Room.
